Most students know OCC now has Wireless Local Area Network, and it can be accessed in the Library, College Center, and Russell Building, and are making use of it.
All buildings soon should be connected. Chip Stoll, director of information technology, said that with Carl D. Perkins funding, the Nursing and Technology buildings are next to be added and should be accessible before the summer semester begins. The plan is for all the buildings on campus to be connected; plus the Southern Education Center in Manahawkin. According to Stoll, they should all be completed before December 2009.
Perkins funding is a Vocational and Technical Entitlement Grant. According to the OCC Web site, its purpose is "to develop more fully the academic, vocational and technical skills of secondary and postsecondary students pursing vocational and technical training."
For the year beginning July 1, 2007, and ending June 30, 2008, OCC was granted $315,000. This money is to be used in the areas of Administrative Office Management, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Criminal Justice, Nursing and Allied Health, Visual Communications and Interpreter Training.
Kim Skruodys, a student in the Solar Lounge recently, was getting some schoolwork done using her laptop. She said being able to use her personal laptop is a lot easier than having to use one of the public computers in the Library because she does not have to convert her work to different computers all the time. She also said she likes being able to come to the College Center to do her work.
"It's more comfortable in here, and with the cafeteria right around the corner, it makes it really convenient."
Some other students said they found downloading the security software is a little troublesome. The software, McAfee Antivirus 8.5i, can be downloaded free. The software can be downloaded by logging into Ocean Cruiser.
Some students said they have attempted to connect to the wireless network but found it too much of a hassle to download the virus protection first. Others said they do not even bother, and they can still connect to the wireless network without downloading the software.
Stoll said the security was recently added to make it safer for the students, faculty and staff members.
Log in instructions can be found on the main screen of Ocean Cruiser. There are three different access levels-students, staff/faculty and guests.
Instructions for different computers and operating systems, including Windows Vista and Mac OS are provided.
